ADSL (Asymmetric DSL)

When you use frequencies above the voice band on shared ordinary telephone lines you have ADSL (Asymmetric DSL), but these higher frequencies can interfere with regular telephone usage. There are two modulation schemes available, Discrete Multitone (DMT) and Carrierless Amplitude Phase (CAP).

There are several steps in the process of getting the Internet to your PC.

The process starts with the Internet, then your Internet Service Provider (ISP), moving on to the carrier, next is the Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), followed by the first splitter. After the first splitter is the main distribution frame (MDF), with regular ADSL you have another splitter going to your telephone and to a DSL modem which connects to your PC. If you were to search the internet for ADSL there are ample diagrams describing this exact process.
